Google Maps Branding Lesson

Remember Google Maps? More likely you never forgot it, even when it was renamed Google Local a few months back. Apparently the Local moniker didn't stick, because Google Local is moving back to Google Maps again.

Fairly simple to see why. The concept of online maps has been around for a long time and is pretty well established in the public consciousness, while local search is still mostly the realm of us search geeks.

This also means the little "Local" link on the main Google search page has been replaced with a "Maps" link.

I think this is a a blow to the branding of Local Search in general, but you've got to go with what people know, and people just don't know local... yet.
