Mayer on Google Video: "We made a big mistake"

As noted in the Seattle Pi, Google's Marissa Meyer acknowledged that the initlal release of Google Video was less than stellar:

"We made a big mistake," Mayer, who oversees all of Google's search products, said Tuesday. "You can't come out and launch a product like Google Video and say 'CSI' and 'Survivor' are there if they're not on the home page."

I also found this a bit amusing:

New York Times technology reviewer David Pogue said Jan. 19 that Google's video store was "appallingly half-baked" and that the site "doesn't live up to Google's usual standards of excellence."

"Usual standards of excellence?" Even though I'm pretty consistently impressed with the quality of Google's search results (especially when you consider most companies don't even have a decent site search, and Microsoft stll doesn't have effective desktop search), doesn't Google have a bit of a rep for rolling out "half-baked" products.

Google Reader? Google Talk? Google Groups?

Google's search product is amazing, and so is a lot of their other stuff, but they do tend to release buggy products. That said, Google Video wasn't necesssarily buggy, just not implemented as effectively as it could have been.

That's something they've taken care of now. The new design features their money products much more prominently.
