The Cult of Google Maps

It seems like a small subculture has sprung up around the Google Maps API recently. HousingMaps.com seemed to have touched it off, but now everyone's piling on.

You can see Google Maps mashups for cheap gas, traffic conditions, and sex offenders, along with many others.

New York Times did a bit on it today, following up on the recent Wired and Business Week pieces. There's even a few Maps API blogs that have popped up recently which aren't bad.

Seems like a pretty basic business model, if you have the inclination. I picked up a few potential mashup domains, but who knows if I'll ever get around to developing them.

We'll be covering the details on how to use the Google Maps API in the next issue of Search Engine News.

Update: In a move that should keep those Google Maps "cultists" happy, Google just released Google Moon, adding some NASA imagery to the Google Maps interface.

Search Engine Roundtable has more.
