Web Accelerator Offline, As Was Google (Briefly)

Google has shut off access to it's ill-fated, ill-received Google Web Accelerator (GWA). Unlike a few days ago, when it appeared Google was redirecting people from the GWA page to the Google Toolbar page, it looks like Google's found a more graceful way for GWA to bow out.

The GWA download page now says the following:

Thank you for your interest in Google Web Accelerator. We have currently reached our maximum capacity of users and are actively working to increase the number of users we can support.

Fine and good. I'm over this story. If you want more information, Tristan Louis has some good stuff. I'll probably give it a thorough review this month in SearchEngineNews.com once all the hysteria has subsided.

In an apparently unrelated story, Google was offline for about 15 minutes yesterday. The outage lasted from about 6:45 to about 7 p.m. EST. During that time, a site called SoGoSearch took Google's place at the Google.com domain. This led to some wide speculation about domain hijacking, but Om Malik has word from Google that SoGoSearch only showed up because DNS servers couldn't find Google.com, and resolved instead to google.com.net, which is a SoGoSearch site.

SoGoSearch is currently offline, and I don't envy the bandwidth charges they might be paying, but the publicity must be nice.

Update: Google's withdrawl of GWA sets off Zawodny's BS detector. I'd have to agree.
