Why I Still Like Yahoo Over MySpace

So MySpace edged out Yahoo on total pageviews in November according to ComScore.

News Corp.'s MySpace recorded 38.7 billion U.S. page views last month, compared with 38.1 billion for Yahoo Inc....

Here's why I'd still rather be Yahoo:

  • Yahoo's still got a hell of a lot more unique visitors. 130 million visitors vs. 57.2 million for MySpace. Page views does mean more ad impressions, but you've got the same people looking at your pages, so you need a good demographic.
  • Yahoo has a more varied demographic. Yahoo's huge content network covers everything from finance to food. MySpace seems pretty dependent on 14-year-old girls who really like Taking Back Sunday. Probably still a pretty lucrative advertising demographic, until they outgrow social networking as a trend.
  • Yahoo's new AJAX implementations on many of their properties is probably seriously eating into their page views, since fewer page loads are now needed.
  • Yahoo users still spend more time on the site, an average of 5.5 hours on the site in November vs. 4 hours on MySpace.

I can see this generation of MySpacers outgrowing the trend in a year or two, and their little brothers and sisters (the next generation) viewing MySpace like today's kids view Limp Bizkit and Backstreet Boys. A few years ago they were so cool, not they're just kinda lame.
